Application letter

What is a Job Application Letter?

A job application letter, also known as a cover letter, should be sent or uploaded with your resume when applying for jobs. While your resume offers a history of your work experience and an outline of your skills and accomplishments, the job application letter you send to an employer explains why you are qualified for the position and should be selected for an interview.

This is what a letter of application should include:

  1. Header with your name and contact details
  2. Hiring manager’s address
  3. Opening paragraph introducing yourself and your application
  4. Two body paragraphs explaining why you’re a great candidate and your motivation behind the application
  5. Closing paragraph with a call to action directed at the employer
  6. Your signature and attachments list

How to write an effective application letter:

1.  1. Specifically state what it is that you are applying for or interested in applying for (e.g.,         the position, appointment, student or other visa, extension on a deadline, loan, credit              card, etc.).

2.  2. Identify the reason that you are applying. Be as specific as possible.

3.  3. Give the reasons that you feel you merit or qualify for the position or object/thing you          are applying for, if applicable (e.g., your goals, experience, qualifications or                         accomplishments, positive traits, and so forth).

4. 4. Identify what you hope to accomplish by sending your letter and the action you would like    the recipient to take.

5. 5. Indicate the date by which you would like a response to your letter or by which you would    like the action to be taken.

6. 6. Refer to any other documents you have included with your letter, such as application or       other forms, letters of recommendation, resume, examples of your work, etc.

7. 7. Include a request for any information you would like to be sent, if applicable.

8. 8. Include your contact information, such as e-mail address or phone number where you can    most easily be reached and the time(s) when you available for calls, etc.

Close your letter by sincerely thanking the person for his/her time or for any assistance he/she can give you.

Expressions / Sentences

The language features that you use are simple present tense and simple past tense. The simple present tense can be used to describe your skills, while the simple past tense can be used to describe past experiences at the office or past achievements.

Be direct. In these opening sentences, you want to explicitly let the reader know which position you're applying for. Hiring managers are often looking at candidates for several open jobs at any given time. Make sure it's easy for them to discover your intent. For example:

I am interested in the coordinator position at ABC company.

Mention a contact. If someone referred you to the position, include that information early on as well. Referrals are one of the key aspects to securing an interview, so be sure to mention yours right away. For example:

Jane Doe suggested I contact you about the job, as she feels my skills would be a good fit for the position.

State an accomplishment. Try to state an accomplishment from your previous job. If you can, show how you added value to the last company you worked for. You might even add the job title you had if it's similar to the one you are applying for. For example:

As coordinator at XYZ Enterprises, I have increased my group's output by 37% over the past 15 months.

Express excitement. Convey your passion for your work, and your excitement about the job and company. Your cover letter is an opportunity to sell yourself to the hiring manager, and to share why you're well qualified for the job. For example:

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss what I have to bring to the position at ABC company.

Use keywords. If you can include any keywords from the job listing, do so. You can mention a skill you have that was included in the post. For example:

My track history of successfully managing teams and delivering projects on time and on budget makes me a good fit for this role.

Semarang, Indonesia

Dear Ms. Atma

Based on information I received from Seno Haw's social media (Instagram) on February 12, 2023, the company you lead now requires employees in the Drafter position. My relevant experience in a similiar position really matches with the qualifications you need.

Graduated from college with experience in software such as 3D or 2D animation and Adobe Creative Suite. When I was still in college, my part time to help draw home designs for one year, besides that I also have a certificate in this field. After I graduated I worked as a drafter in a company for two years. I believe that my three years experience is very relevant and can be applied in your company.

I really hope to get further opportunities and be accepted at Seno Haw's. For your attention I would like to thank.

Sincerenly Applicant
